Nissan Repair: cracking noise when turn both directions, constant velocity joints, nissan altima

Question
 Hallo Von,
I have 1997 Nissan Altima.. and it started to make a cracking noise when I turn /left or right/. There is no noise when I'm driving straight. Somebody told me it may be the axles, if so can you explain me please how to change them!
Thanks in advance. I appreciate your time.
Nick

Answer
Nikolay,

The car is a front wheel drive and the constant velocity joints have boots that keep the grease in them.  When a car with front wheel drive gets old the boots tear and the grease leaks out.  The result is noise when you turn left or right.  You need them replaced with rebuilt units to preclude a driveshaft failure.  The cost is about $100 bucks a side plus another $150 in labor.  Also, get the car aligned when this job is done.
