Nissan Repair: nissan random surging, crank angle sensor, smog check

Question
dear expert. im back ,i have the nissan with the "seasonal" problem its the 88 pathfinder with a v6,230k mi,new dist, cap, rotor, wires, crank angle sensor,o2 sensor, computer, air filter, fuel filter. anyway it was stalling, surging at any speed any throttle pos.it also didnt pass the "idle" part of the smog (6%co). you told me to replace the cap and wires. i did and it fixed the prob for about 2 weeks .so i think were gettin closer. as soon as it rained and snowed (i live at lake tahoe)it started doing it again about 6 hours after it rained .(also the check eng light came on)code 32.(egr). i reset the computer and checked the code after driving it and 55 came up (checks ok) but it still dies and surges the same. could the cap be the problem again?im thinkin the coil,or god help me,a ground.the check eng light has not come back on. please help thank you

Answer
Bill,

I feel that this is ignition related and the problem is when things get moisture around them.  Basically, the engine is getting alternative paths for ground and this is causing the problem.  You could spray WD40 on the cap and wires like fogging them from a distance and that will dissipate the water and if the problem goes away you probably did not buy a factory cap and wires.  Aftermarket caps, rotors and wires are not as good as the originals.  Yes, the ones from Nissan are quite expensive.  But, I have found it is worth it to eliminate problems.  If the WD40 spray thing does not work then you need to be checking the wires that lead to the distributor for cuts and that could cause the problem too.  If there is insulation that is erroded and wires are exposed even a little there will be a path to ground when the humidity rises.  now, on the EGR valve that should be removed and cleaned first.  If that does not correct the problem replace the EGR.  I have found that cleaning the carbon off the seat and making the pathway clear will get you through smog check.  Now, if the valve itself is defective the valve will have to be replaced.
