Hi Billy, Your site has been a wealth of information but I haven't been able to locate a posting on my problem. I have a 94 Olds Cutlass Supreme w/48,000 miles on 3.1 engine.  It stalled the other day and now I can get it to run but the coolant light comes on after only 3-4 minutes, the two cooling fans do not come on at all. I've let it run for a little bit before shutting it down but they never come on. The upper and lower radiator hoses get hot so I'm assuming the thermostat is ok.  There is also a noise like a pinking or possible knock coming from the area of the front of the engine or possibly from inside.  It may be too late but I thought I'd ask for suggestions. There is plenty of coolant and no leaks that I can find. Other than towing, I'm afraid to try to drive it to a computer.  Thanks

hi jim.sorry your question got lost.but let,s see if we can figure this thing out.well the noise is prob timeing chain.that is what is inside that cover.and would certainly cause it to run terrible.the chain has prob jumped.as for the coolant light comeing on this could be a bad sensor that would be in the overflow tank or top of the radiator.if eng is not overhaeating.but if you are saying it overheats in 3 4 mins then that is a whole diff story.so i will have to assume it is normal temp. good luck please take a sec of your time to rate my service.ty billy mac feel free to follow up anytime

Follow-Up:
Thanks for the help, the engine has smoothed out, still has a little what sounds like lifter noise but it had that before.  Coolant light is going to be the sensor on the radiator which I'll change shortly.  Only problem now is the two cooling fans behind the radiator still do not come on. I've replaced the relay switch and the temp sensor near the thermostat housing. Both radiator hoses get hot so I'm assuming the thermostat is working.  I've tested both fans by wiring direct and they both work. I've let it run about 20min and it doesn't overheat but neither fan comes on. I turned the AC on (no freon), still no fan.  Short of wiring one of them up to the ignition, can you suggest anything else to check for them?

Thanks Again,

Second Follow-up:

Hi Billymac,
I've tested the fans and they are ok. I replaced the two relays and the temperature sensor and they still won't work.  Is there anything else that I can try?

Thanks

Answer
hi jim.well here is the sequence ,,the eng heats up to temp and when it starts to go above normal.the temp sensor grounds itself out sends a ground ref to the relay opens the switch and powers the fans.try this unplug the temp sensor near the t stat houseing.with the car running at normal temp.does the fan come on when you unplug this plug??if not ground thetemp sensor connector with a piece of wire.does the fan come on .if so then one you have the wrong sensor    two  the plug at that sensor is makeing a bad connection.i would shy away from wireing direct but if you do this cut the fan wires so you are not powering up the eng harness this is the safe way but if you can,t find nothing get back with me we will find some other way to trace this prob..billymac
