Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: buick reatta - egr valve, buick reatta, egr valve

Question
hello again, thanks for your reply to my question. you mentioned the egr valve and i have to be honest with you - i have never even heard of that! what is it? the guy who ran the diagnostic check for me sd that the reading came back as  a spark issue, so thats how they arrived at the ignition module. but i thought that strange too since i had already had one put in. so what is this valve and is this something i can check myself or with my mechanic friend, or something i need to bring in to a shop ? thanks again, i appreciate your time.

Answer
The EGR valve allows a small amount of exhaust gas to be drawn into the intake manifold during cruising speeds, to cool down the peak combustion temperatures, and help emissions. But a stuck, or dirty valve will allow the exhaust to be drawn in when it isn't supposed to, and act like a big vacuum leak.
Now, you may have a spark issue, but something to keep in mind is, if there was a problem that caused damage to the very first module, and the module was replaced without repairing what damaged it, the replacement could be damaged the same way, as well as any more replacement modules, so don't let someone just replace one, unless they look for, and find/repair the cause.
Yes, you can R&R, and clean the EGR valve. It is actually a scheduled service item.
