Pontiac Repair: Buick instrument cluster question..., backyard mechanic, dashboard lights

Question
Howdy, Todd!
I've got a 2001 Buick LeSabre (Custom)...and most of the lights on the instrument cluster are burned out.  The gear shift lights still work, and the odometer...but the main "dashboard" lights...the one for the speedometer, for example...have burned out.  And it's exasperating to drive in darkness.  I know that the instrument cluster is basically just a big computer board, and you don't just unscrew an old bulb and screw in a new one like you used to.  But is replacing the bulbs...using a soldering iron, etc...something that I could probably do, or is it beyond the abilities of a good backyard mechanic?
Any suggestions, advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
David Gardner

Answer
Hi David:

we don't fix the clusters in cars any more we just order exchange units. "MOST" of them do not have acatual bulb in them anymore they use led's they take less energy to light then a conventinal bulb so they use then instead. That car may have bulb in it but I doubt it. You can stop by any GM dealer and the parts guys can tell you if they have bulbs or not but I doubt it does.. usually an exchange remanufacture cluster is around $200.00. Good luck :)
