RV Repair: corner post dry rot, metal reinforcement, reinforcement plates

Question
The corner where myjack is mounted was loose and after I tried to tighten it, I found that there was nothing grabbing the screw threds. After pulling the jack off and pulling the siding away a little I could see that the wood was flaking out in small chunks. This is an 11" Fleetwood Elkwood and the area is on the right rear which is where the entrance door is located on the side about a 16" from the corner. If I were to repair this so that I could reatach the jack, how extensive would this be and is this something that could be done as a home project.

I am an autobody tech but have never removed siding on an R.V.

Answer
Hi Mark:
Sure, I think you can do it OK. It is a lot of work, you have to take of the outer skin and remove all the rot and replace it with good wood. It is usually a big job but you'll feel good when you get it done. You can splice the new wood into the stuff that is good after you remove the rot. Put in metal reinforcement plates and recess the screws so the outer skin will fit  Good luck.
