RV Repair: Please Help., system locks, loose wire

Question
I have a 1984 Chevy Allegro that has 2 roof aircondtionings in it.I think I have a problem. I don't know? Well does the front roof aircondtioning run off the Generator? It won't work off the Generator, it just works off eleticity. What could be the problem? Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter very much.

Answer
Hi Brenda:
The solution depends mostly on the size of the generator. It takes at least a 4.5 KW generator to run both air conditioner units. If you have a smaller one then the control system locks out the front unit when you are running the gen-set. If your generator is big enough then the problem is elsewhere. There is usually a switch in one of the larger clothes cabinets that can be set to the front, the rear or both units. Try and find the switch and see what it is set to. If all of that is ok then have someone check the switch to see if there is a loose wire or maybe the switch is bad. If it still does not work the have somebody check the operation of the transfer switch that switches the power from the generator to shore power for the coach, maybe one leg of the gen set is not coming through. Good luck.
