RV Repair: Electrical, gage wire, happy camping

Question
what gage wire do I need to use to make a extension cord for a 30 amp RV ?

Answer
Don,
You will need to use 10 gauge wire and don't make it any longer that 30'.  If you need to go longer than that you will need to increase the wire to 8 or 6 or bigger depending on the length of the run required.  You can test the RV to see if the cord is adequate by checking the voltage at one of your receptacles with no load on.  It should be between 108 and 132.  Turn the a/c on and when the compressor has kicked in check the voltage again.  If it's below 108 you need a larger cord to carry the load.  I hope this helps, good luck and happy camping.
