RV Repair: Propane tank coversion, propane tanks, propane tank

Question
My tent trailer still has the old type of propane tanks. I am running low in gas and I know I have to replace them with the newer type of tanks per regulation. What other parts do I need beside the new tanks?
Can I use the regular 5 gallon tanks used for home BBQ? Is this something I can do at home?

thank you

Answer
In addition to a new tank, I would replace the hose, the regulator and the coupler at the same time. Your old hose is probably getting brittle and cracked and needs replacing and the new coupler will make sure the new tank hooks up to the camper with a leak proof seal. If you have never replaced the regulator, I would, it's your only line of defense between the tank and your gas appliances.
I would defer the second question to an RV supply dealer.  I believe the tanks are the same but do not want to be quoted as saying so.
It's also a good idea to buy a guard for the regulator to protect it from flying rocks, etc.
