Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): how to instal a battery, thick cables, positive cable

hi my grandpa has a 1992 deutz allis 12.5 engine hydrostatic riding mower, that he took the battery out of and got a new one but he doesnt remember where the one black wire that comes from the starter up to the battery gos, when he puts that wire to the postive it will start, but when he trys to start with the key it will just click...could you please help???thank you amy

Most riding mowers have a "solenoid" between the engine and the battery, a few have the solenoid on top of the starter, so I will
assume you have the first setup.
The battery hooks up to 2 thick cables, which are usually, but not
always color coded.  If there is a red cable or terminal, it is
hooked up to the positive or + post on the battery. The one that goes
to the negative or - post, goes to the frame on the other end, so
make sure that connection is clean as well.

The positive cable goes from the battery to the "solenoid", which has two large posts, it bolts to one of these posts.  On the other
post there should be another cable goint to and bolting on the post of the starter.
  Hook it up this way and see if that takes care of it, since you hear a click, it sounds like the rest is hooked up OK
