Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere LX188 Lawn Mower, john deere lx188, 4 stroke engines

Question
Hi John

I have been having numerous problems with my JD LX188 lawn mower.  Water has been disappearing from the radiator, with some blowing out the exhaust and some getting mixed with the oil in the sump.

I have replaced the head gasket, exhaust gaskets, manifold gaskets ect, twice in 6 months (once by the repair shop and once by me).  I only put the engine back together yesterday and everything was running fine, however today we again have the same problems.  I suspect that the problem is more serious.  Could it be that there is a crack in the head or even in the engine block that expands when the engine gets hot and then the water can leak away.  I had a really good look at the head while it was off and I couldn't see any sign of cracks.

Is this easily fixed or am I best to buy a new engine?  If I need to replace the engine do you think it is possible to replace it with a different model ect or do I need to buy the exact same engine.  I can't seem to find the exact same engine (FD501V) in Australia?  However I can buy a FH601V, its not water cooled but given the problems I've been having, that sounds rather appealing!!

Many thanks for your help.

Cheers

Justin

Model:  JD LX188

Answer
Hello Justin:

>>It is Highly Possible that the Head or Block is Cracked and is Expanding when the Engine Heats up.
>>Unless you have the Equipment, you cannot Really Inspect the Head or Block for Cracks.
>>You can Use the FH601V Engine as a Replacement if Required.
>>You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.buykawpower.com/kmcb2c/main.jsp and Select Parts Catalog on the Lower Left of the Page. Now Select 4 Stroke Engines. Now Select your Engine Model.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
