Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman Gear Case Assembly - Part# 193354, crankshaft pulley, woodruff key

Question
Mr. Bridgers, My 6.75 HP Craftsman self propelled rotary lawn mower doesn't want to self propel, at least not with a load.  It will propel if I lift the back wheels off of the ground. I changed the belt even though the old belt looked fine. Now I suspect the gear case assembly, part#193354. I've looked for a diagram of it, but can't find one. Is it possible to take this assembly apart and repair individual parts inside it? My owners manual doesn't give a breakdown of it.  I can buy a new assembly for $60, but I'd rather crack into it and replace individual parts if possible.  Know where I can find a diagram?  Steve (model 917.370735)

Answer
Hello Steve:

>>From your Description it Sounds like the Woodruff Key for the Transmission Input Shaft has Sheared, the Crankshaft Pulley is Busted or the Woodruff Key has Sheared or there is Internal Problems with the Transmission.
>>Using a Steering Wheel Puller, Remove the Input Shaft Pulley and Check the Key.
>>If the Key is Good, then Remove the Blade and Blade Adapter and then the Crankshaft Pulley.
>>If the Key is Good, then Internal Transmission Problems May be your Problem.
>>You can Purchase Some Internal Components for this Transmission.
>>To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action?sid=PSHx20080114x00001 and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Search.
