Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mac 3216, line pieces, piece of the puzzle

Question
Hi John,I just finished reading your answer to a similar question on installing fuel lines on a 3216 Mac model chainsaw. The one I have is probably 15 years old, but brand new in that my father-in-law had it given to him by the Ford dealership when he bought a new truck years back. After using it the first year, when I went to start it last year it wouldn't start. After investigating I saw that the fuel lines had disintegrated, literally. Fuel was all over the place and fuel line pieces were also falling out. I bought new line and installed it where I thought it made sense. I pumped the bulb, gave it a pull and it started right up! However, it quickly stalled, and my efforts to restart it produced the same stalling, and I tried to figure out why, and I am still trying! I know when I was cleaning out the old rotted lines I found one that looked as though it actually had been sliced length wise intentionally. At the time it made no sense to me what it would be for, but apparently I am missing that piece of the puzzle, and I am at a lost as to what to try next. any suggestions on your part?

Answer
The primer bulb, is actually a purge, which pulls fuel through the carb.  There are two nipples on the carb, one is the fuel supply, the other goes to the primer.  There are two covers on the carb, one of the covers is held on by one screw in the center, the nipple
closest to this cover is the one the fuel line is attached to, which goes into the tank and has the filter on the end of it, and this
line needs to be long enough to travel to the bottom of the tank when the chainsaw is in any position.
The other nipple goes to the primer, which has two nipples, and
another line goes from the primer, back to the tank.  The primer
has a check valve, so it has to be hooked up correctly, so depress
the bulb, place a finger over one of the nipples, take your finger
off of the bulb while the other one is still blocking the nipple.
If the bulb stays "sucked in", that is the side that goes to the carb.

Hook it up that way and see if that cures the problems.  Usually
you have to go through the carb too, but maybe not.

Let me know,
