Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): champion domestic mower, overhead valve engines, briggs and stratton

Question
hello i have brought a champion mower (R484SP) with a SV150 engine. it has had about 15 hours of use, i have had it in storage over winter where i had drained both oil and petrol. upon putting new oil and petrol in the mower started to smoke and then black oil started leaking from the exhaust, my question is what has gone wrong and is it possible to fix it myself and do i need any parts etc. thank you very much for your help Dave

Answer
Hello David:

>>You can View a Breakdown of the Unit at this Site Addy, http://www.jackssmallengines.net/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab and Enter the OEM and the Model Numbers (Example: 2690451). Now Double Click on your Model in the Results Area.
>>I Used the Model Number Mower in the Example Above for Reference.
>>Simplicity Does Not List the Engine Model in the Breakdown for this Unit.
>>Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. If this is a Briggs and Stratton  Engine, then you can Also Use this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of the Engine.
>>Are you Sure you Did Not Overfill the Crankcase Oil?
>>Thanks.
