Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): clutch assy on 8hp briggs and stratton engine, 8hp briggs and stratton, starter clutch

Question
The starter clutch will not go back onto the crankshaft. Do you think it has seized due to heat or use? I have ordered a new clutch and hopefully it will solve my problem.

Answer
Hello Randall:

>>The Problem is that the Tip of the Crankshaft that the Starter Clutch Slides Over has Mushroomed a Small Amount and it is Slightly Larger that it is Supposed to be.
>>Sometimes the Flywheel Puller Causes the Clutch Support Tip of the Crankshaft to Flare a Little. Use a File and Dress Up the First 1/4" to 1/2 of the Tip of the Starter Clutch.
>>You are going to File the Round Side Area, Not the Flat Top of the Crankshaft. You need to Shrink the Crankshaft with the File enough for the Starter Clutch to Slide back Onto the Clutch Support of the Crankshaft.
>>Sometimes if you Use a Hammer to Jar the Crankshaft and Flywheel to Remove the Flywheel from the Crankshaft and Did Not Use the Crankshaft Protector the Tip Flares.
>> In my Instruction File I have made, I even Suggest Using a Socket that is Slightly Larger than the Starter Clutch Support Section of the Crankshaft to Prevent this Problem when Removing the Flywheel from the Crankshaft if you have to Use a Hammer and Pry Bar.
>>Also the Flywheel Puller/Steering Wheel Puller where the Bolt Applies Pressure to the Top of the Crankshaft will Sometimes Flare the Top of the Clutch Support and you will have the Problem you Described.
>>I Hope I have Described this in a Manner so you Understand what is Causing this Problem and How to Correct it.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
