Steering Column Repair: ignition lock cylinder replace, mitshubisi eclipse, tilt steering

Question
I drilled out the lock cylinder on a 95 mitshubisi eclipse tilt steering column, automatic, since the keys were stolen.  Once it was removed I installed the new one.  I turned the key to start, but it would not start.  you can turn the key to lock and take the key out but steering wheel does not lock.  When I pulled the lock cylinder out the shaft behind the cylinder came out.  Can not get it back in.

Answer
Hi Greg:

Sorry about your keys.  This one is a little tricky.  the shaft that came out is what set he locking mechanism in the steering column.  It has to go in further than you are putting it.  The part that lock the steering column is spring loaded and rides on the cam of this loose piece.  You will need to look inside the hole, find the spring loaded locking mechanism that is our of position and press it out of the way.  Holding it there, you will them be able to insert the shaft to the point it needs to be to both allow the lock to work properly and the locking mechanism to work as well.
I hope this helps you
