Steering Column Repair: steering column, 1996 chevy lumina, chevy lumina

I have a 1996 chevy lumina tilt column that was recently broken into. My steering column was broken or just needs to be repaired. I cannot start the engine. Tried to steal my car because of my 22" rims. The rims were locked so they could not get them off so they just tried to take the entire car. Could I go to a salvage yard to get a new column off of the same car or should it just be repaired? I checked it out and the piece that slides back and forth is not connected with the rounded open piece so does it just need to be pushed back into place? Please help!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about your car.  It's impossible for me to tell from your description the best route for you to take.  Plus there are some questions I need you to answer before we can help you determine the best route.

If you can, send me a picture or two (from your cell phone is ok) and I can tell by the damage what design it is, the extend of the damage and what your best options are.

Lastly, does your key have a little black chip like the one in the picture I enclosed?
