Steering Column Repair: steering column, jeep wrangler, chevrolet truck

Question
I have an issue with my steering column.  it is a tilt wheel jeep wrangler 1987 with a 4.2 liter engine.  It was having issues turning on when the wheel was tilted all the way up.  It still started... A few days later it completely stopped.  When I turn the ignition I hear nothing but the key switch moving.  I took apart the column to replace the key switch and the the electric switch.  I learned the rod connecting the key switch to the electric switch had come undone.  Is this a replacement column or is there away to take the column apart to get the rod reconnected?

Answer

Rack Gear
Hi Larry:

You broke a fairly common part inside the column.  It's the "rack gear actuator" and it connects to rotating lock to the shaft that moves the ignition switch.  I am enclosing a picture of the part here for you to see.  To replace it, you will need to partially disassemble the column.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.
