Steering Column Repair: 91 chevy windshield wiper problem, windshield wiper motor, windshield wipers

hello, I have a 91 chevy step side pickup with tilt steering wheel and the windshield wipers pretty much work when they want to :) when you turn switch on u can hear the windshield wiper motor come on but the wipers do not move half the time . can there be a short in the steering column?? the wiper switch has the turn signals and the cruise control all in one assembly. please help!! thanks

Your problem is fairly typical.  Most of the time the repair is accomplished by simply replacing the wiper motor.  The key to the diagnosis, is the fact that you hear something when you operate the stalk.  That means a signal is being sent from the switch to the motor, but the motor is not responding--therefore, the switch is probably fine, and the motor is (or relay inside the motor) is bad.

I would suggest replacing the wiper motor under the hood.  It's a fairly simple job as opposed to replacing the wiper switch in the column.
