Steering Column Repair: steering colmun repair on a 1987 supra, steering column, lock and key

Question
i have a 1987 supra where the key no longer works ( the key is old and lost its shape). i purchased a used steering column with ignition lock and key. (1) how would toy replace the steering column (2) how do you replace the the locking mechanism. is that easier?

thank you for your time

Answer
Hi Aaron:
I would change the ignition lock assembly over only if it was me.  You have the replacement column in your lap so you can see what you need to remove.
From memory though, I think you need to remove the covers (only) to gain access to the break-off bolts that secure the lock assembly to the tube. That's the hardest part.  You will need to chisel the bolts loose on both columns and then chisel them back tight on the car with the new lock.
I would do that instead, because you avoid getting the steering position misaligned, installing bad switches or ending up with a bearing problem you don;t have now.  I like to repair the problem and by buying a used column you will get you everything you need cheaply.

Good luck
Doug
