Towing Issues: Car towed for expired tags in apt., inspection stickers, apartment manager

Question
Question.  1. How is having expired tags breaking the law when parked. 2. What and Who gives the towing company authorization to tow vehicles if tags are expired.

Several of the residents at my apt. complex got towed today for that reason, expired tags, nothing else.  I mean I understand that the apts. have a contract with them, but who gives them the authority to do that.  When we went to management, they had no explanation.  They simply said that the towing company brings in a stack of papers with the photographs of the tags and license plates of each vehicle and she just signed off on them.  She didn't even know how towing procedures work.  Can you help us please.  Thank You

Answer
Again a question with out information to work with....   NO STATE OR CITY to get specific information about....

Depending on what state you are in, some states have inspection stickers to go with the tags and as such if both are expired they are not "driveable or road worthy" and deemed abandoned vehicles...

That opens up a whole new area of laws in many states regarding impounding vehicles...

Now as to the tow company cruising the lot and bringing a list to the management of the complex of vehicles with expired tags, it sounds like they have a provision in the lease - rental contract which you signed when you rented the apartment as it is a very common clause...

Now as to the management signing off on the tow authorizations, that can be real dangerous as the management by signing the papers is agreeing that it is parked illegally (for what ever reason) and they are following the "SPECIFIC STATE LAWS" regarding, signs, notices, and other procedures...  If it is deemed an illegal tow they can be held liable for the fees....

Now I suggest that your apartment manager get some information and quickly about the towing laws, since "IT'S THEIR TAIL" on the line...

Sorry for not having information but I did the best with what little I got to work with.
