Toyota Repair: Engine problem with 2001 Rav4 Edge Manual gearbox, fuel pump filter, oxygen sensors

Question
Hi
We are at the end of our tether with the Rav4 Edge 2001 manual that we bought nearly a year ago.  It has an intermittant problem. When you start the car from cold it is fine. Then once you have been driving for a little while (as if the car had an auto choke, when the choke would go off)the car seems to experience power loss to the engine (total) for a few seconds then jumps back to life. This happens as you change up the gear (from 1st to 2nd). It nearly throws you through the screen as you are accelerating but the engine dies for a couple of seconds. I realise the car doesn't have an auto choke but thats what it feels like.  We have had it at the mechanics, it has had a new fuel pump/filter, new MAF sensor, new oxygen sensors (as it keeps throwing codes out for those). We find if the ECU is reset, the car won't do it for say 4-5 trips but then it starts again and then will do it every time you start it. Also there is a very scuttle pulling back/missing thing that it does when you put it under load and go up the gears.  We just have no idea what to do and mechanics can't find the problem. Could it be a ECU problem?  I have read thousands of posts re the 2001 automatic and the ECU problem that Toyota were aware of but I can't find anything on the manual version. It definately seems like its electrical, or fuel or air related. Its as though the fuel stops going to the engine for a split second.  We are just at our wits end. I don't want to get rid of the car but we have no idea what to try next and I dont' trust it enough to drive it far. Any thoughts would be most appreciated.  Also at the moment, we are trying changing the coil pack (one at a time as suggested by our mechanic) however, he doesn't think its that because the car loses total power to the engine when it does it for those few seconds.
thankyou
Tracy

Answer
I don't think it's the coils either, it's something that affects all of the cylinders at one, the first thing I always ask when there is a drivability issue is what the current trouble codes are, are there any codes in the computer at this time? Or if not, what were the most recent trouble codes, I need the code numbers only.
