Volvo Repair: 2001 S80 Radio, volvo dealer, new radio

Question
The display light on my radio stopped working at the same time as the remote controls on the steering wheel.  I took it in to my Volvo dealer and they told me that I need a whole new radio. $450.00.  The problem happened before when the car was under warranty and they fixed it quickly and it didn't look like they put a new radio in for me at the time.  Is it possible that this is just a fuse problem and the dealer is trying to stick it to me?
Thanks for your help.

Dennis

Answer
Well there is no fuse for just the lights or switches.  First, all the bulbs are contained internally on the radio, so the only way to fix that is to replace it.  Also the radio has a control module in it for diagnostics so I would tend to go with whatever the dealer is telling you here.  If you are at the same dealer that did the first repair, they should have records of what they did the first time to fix it.  Ask them exactly what they did and why this is different than last time.  You may have to have them bring up the technician that is working on your car to explain that one, but you will have a better idea of whats going on.  Not to mention that you will have peace of mind in knowing that they are not ripping you off.
