Dodge: Engine and tranny swap, dodge ram 1500, tranmission

Question
I have a 1996 dodge ram 1500. It is 2 wheel drive, automatic trans, and a 5.2 v8 fuel injected. I would like to essentially swap the engine and tranny to match that of a 1995 model. Would i still need my computer seeing as how the engine will change to carburated, and the transmission to hydrolic instead of electronic? The other problem when i do this is that i won't be able to do them both at the same time, i will have to do the transmission first and then save up enough money to do th engine swap. If i change the transmission and the computer is still connected to the engine, will it look for the tranmission and see it as missing and not work, becuase there will no longer be a connection from the tranny to that computer. I was also told that the 95 and 96 transmissions are EXACTALLY the same except for one being electronic and the other hydrollically controlled. Is this true?

Answer
This is what I pretty much tell everyone, who is looking to perform a difficult swap like this. Just sell your van and buy a 95. The amount of work involved probably isn't worth it and will probably cost more in the long run.

Any motor and any trans can be swapped into any vehicle. It is just that when doing so, you will run into problems. Years ago, we thought putting a LS1 V-8 into a V-6 Camaro would be an easy swap. $10,000 and countless hours later it was in.

You will need the engine, trans, wiring harness, computer from the doner vehicle at the very least. You may also need sensors, cables, linkage...possible even the steering column. You could run into motor mount issues, trans mount issues.

As far as those two transmission being the same, I'm really not sure.

Revision: Sorry, I did read the question. It's a waste of time and money IMO. Can it be done? Yes. Can you do it? Probably not. Are there going to be unforseen problems? More than likely. Are you going to know how to get around them? Probably not. So since my telling you how hard something like this is and that it's probably not a good idea was a waste of an answer, I will answer your questions for you.

Here is an answer:

1st Question-
With your motor, you need the 96 computer. Once you swap engines, you wont need your computer for your motor because wont work on the 95. The 95 computer probably wont work either but that wasn't the question.

2nd Question-
Yes It will look for the trans but not find it. It will probably throw an engine code. It doesn't matter because it wont be controlling your trans. The trans will be controlled hydraulically provided you installed the linkage and cable as well.

Last question-Yes that is true
