Ford: Distributors, lincoln town car, mr nelson

Hello Mr. Nelson,

My name is Keith and I have a 1985 Lincoln Town Car and I would like to know what is the role of the distributor cap and rotor and how would I know if I need them replaced?  I bought the car used and I have never had them replaced, I only had the spark plugs changed.

The distributor and rotor cap relays ignition spark
to each spark plug. THe dist cap can be removed and
inspected for cracks. electrode wear, and black spots.
Compare the new rotor cap and dist cap to the old ones
and excessive wear will be evident.
