Honda: Steering Wheel controls, HDS

Question
QUESTION: Hi Gary,
The steering controls for my '07 Accord, do not work anymore. Any ideas what could be wrong, and could a weak battery also cause this?

ANSWER:  I'd recommend replacing the battery before you troubleshoot this concern. I have seen some silly multiplex electrical issues that were remedied with a good battery and reset of the control units. When the battery is removed touch the pos. and neg. battery cables a few seconds to discharge any residual voltages. This is similar to rebooting a home PC. I would then recommend having the "body codes" checked if the problem remains. Those codes won't have a malfunction lamp on the gauge cluster and are most easily retrieved with the scanner at a Honda dealer.

If you have an SRS light on , there would most likely be a problem in the SRS cable reel.

QUESTION: HI Gary,

I've put in a new battery and situation remains the same. However, in this case, once I put on the battery it somehow triggered the car alarm, and this carried on for a while till i had to lock and unlock the car door before it stopped.

Also the 'D' for drive indicator keeps blinking. I've run my diagnostic on the car (OBD II)  and it came up with nothing. What do you think could be the problems here and what do you recommend?

Thanks.

Answer
The alarm sounding when the battery was installed happens sometimes. If the key cycle in the driver's door turned it off, you're okay.
The D4 light indicates a failure in the transmission system. I'd recommend having the codes inspected with the scanner Honda dealers use.
