Mazda: Ignition Timing, mazda dealer, mazda car

Question
A friend contacted me about a Mazda Car that was sent over from Japan and he was trying to replace the timing chain, after waiting for the chain for a week, then installing it. He thinks that the parts store is not giving him the right information.  They say the firing order is 1,3,4,2 And that his engine is called a 121.9 L 4 cylinder.  If you could tell me if this information is correct and if it is why would it be backfiring the gas back through the carberator?

Answer
Joe, the only advice I can give is to call your local Mazda dealer and ask for the parts department.  They stock manuals, or at least have the info on a computer disc.  They should be able to answer your questions.  If it is not a great imposition I have always had better luck going in person rather than calling.  Best of luck, Bud
