Mercedes: 1985 Mercedes 380SL, aluminum engine, 420sel

How reliable has the V-8 aluminum engine been for
Mercedes in the the 380SL? Any maintenance quirks?
I am looking at purchasing a 1985 model with 78K actual
miles on it.

To my knowledge the V8 has been a reliable engine, it the maintenance has been performed on a regular basis. I would suggest visiting http://www.benzworld.org/    with specific question about your year model.
