Mercedes: 1992 190E Idler arm, exhaust flange, standard precautions

Question
I have a 1992 190E that has play in the idler arm. I bought a rebuild kit. But I am wondering exactly how to change it. Do I need to remove the exhaust pipe that is right above it? What else should I look out for? I would greatly appreciate any advice you could offer.

Answer
Dirk,
If the bolt that hold the idler in the frame is going to be blocked by the exhaust, the it will need to be removed or depending on the amount of distance required you may be able to loosen the motor mount enough to lift the engine to allow the bolt to come out. If you decide to lift the engine be very careful about any attached components that ma be bent or damaged during the lift.
If you need to remove the exhause to allow the blot to come out, be very careful about the bolts holding the exhaust flange.
If they are rusted then they may require cutting to get them out. Again, standard precautions relating to lifting the vehicle  should be observed.
Good Luck
