Mercedes: Gas fumes!, mercedes 380 sec, fuel fire

1982 Mercedes-380-SEC (gas) I don't see this vehicle on your list, but thought I would give it a shot.  
The gas fumes are terrible lately and I have had just about everyone and his brother tring to pin point the reason....I am now thinking of taking the gas tank out and having it looked at..UGH, what a job!  Thought mabey you would have a clue as to what else this might be and save me a whole lot of anziety!  Appreciate your pondering this for me...             Lynn

Hmmm.
I will try to help.
A fuel fire can torch you and the car in seconds, just breathing the gas vapor is toxic.

Any fuel leak near the fuel injectors will turn to vapor and stink + be a fire hazard.
A plugged catalytic converter + exhaust manifold leak will stink and be a hazard.
Get the car on a hoist and look for damp lines or fittings = leak = fire and health hazard.
The fuel tank fill or vent hose cracked = fire and health hazard.

Danger:
This car should not be on the road = fire and health hazard.

Please tow it to a dealer for diagnosis before it kills you.
