Mercedes: intrest in 190e, master mechanics, rear shocks

Hi Im interested in a 1987 190e 3.3 16 valve, what can you tell me about them, some people that i have talk to say that the 109e's were plauged with problems and the such,  this one is my uncles and has kinda babied it since it was bought new, he has had some problems with it, currently rear shocks but is willing to sell it, i understand the 16 valve is the sport version and is kinda hard to find here in the US, as well as pricey, i would like to know all the information on this car good bad the whole thing, im taking mechanics in school so i should understand it all so throw it at me

Don't recall a 3.3L for that year, it should be a 2.3L.
