Just bought a Mercedes 1976 300 D with tansmission shot. The engine starts easily (I must wait 15 - 20 seconds after the glow light goes out or will not start). It burns what it seems to me diesel at the tailpipe (just a little, even hot).
How to determine the source, then what to do. Where do I find a good book on diesel thoubleshooting and repairs.
Quick snap accelerator push does not seem to make any changes.
Thanks, Wilson

You have issues:
How many miles on the car?
When you say diesel burning, do you mean smoke or black powder/slime from exhaust pipe?

#1. Adjust valves.
#2. Replace glow plugs.

I would not bother getting a book for your car yet, join http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/forumdisplay.php3?f=15
all the help you need is there, and many people will walk you through each DIY.

What are the transmission symptoms, there are several issues that will act like major damage when it is a $10.00 USD spring that you can change in an hour.
THANKS, HERE ARE THE ANSWERS TO  #1 & #2
#1 I do not know the miles since the odometer has only 5 digits. Maybe 300 or 400K judging by the rest of the car.
I will adjust the valves and I will clean the plugs.

#2 Transmission does not respond on any shift, engine revs up and nothing happens. I think I have the 722.1 because only 3 speed on the floor + reverse. None of them engage  (Automatic tansmission). Fluid looks clean with slight odor (burnt ?) and correct level.
Anything else to check ?
Thanks

Answer
Replace glow plugs with NEW, or test and use old glow plugs.

Transmission issue sounds like B2 piston and/or K1 and K2 springs may be bad.

and post your transmission problem, there are several other mechanics on the diesel forum who are better at transmission than I.
