Oldsmobile/Buick: 83 cutlass supreme transmission fluid, oldsmobile cutlass supreme, dexron ii

Question
Hi, i own an 83 cutlass supreme 2dr and am wondering what type of transmission fluid my car takes??? iam thinking of doing a fluid change but do not have an owners manual and do not know what type to use.....thanx

Answer
Steve,

Rule of thumb: If you don't have the manual handy than remove the transmission dipstick and look for a listing of what type of transmission fluid your vehicle utilizes. I too own a 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. I hopped outside and cross checked to make sure. It reads DEXRON II. (GM)DEXRON fluid goes all the way up to DEXRON-VI. MERCON fluid is Ford's equivalent. Go down to your local automotive supplier and check the transmission fluid labels. Almost all of them will have a label that says "Recommended use for GM DEXRON II equivalent". Actually (and for quite some time) there is a few synthetic ATF blends that can be used for Ford MERCON and GM DEXRON applications. Its your choice really. This question pops up quite frequently from newer car owners. In which some makes/models are sensitive to this.
