Suzuki: MVA & TOWING DAMAGE, suzuki grand vitara, 2007 suzuki grand vitara

Question
I had a MVA, and the repairs were done at the body shop, the frame was bent etc.  The vechile was three weeks old a 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara AWD, it was on it's way for a front end alignment.  The tow company apparently, towed it and balded the back two tires right through.  Not much as been said to me other than don't worry everything will be taken care of you have good insurance.  However, they are replacing the tires etc. Now there is problems with the front differential, and the transfer case, drive shaft etc.  Could this be caused from towing?  To bald the back two tires right through would the vehicle had to been left in park instead of neutral?  The accident invovled under carriage damage as I drove up onto a concrete barrier.  The ins. estimator estimated approx. $4000.00 damage.  It is now being pulled apart by the dealership where I purchaed the vehicle.  Could you tell me if you have heard or know problems with towing a vehicle where the tires would be come bald through and if so what type of damage would it cause?

Answer
Yes, what you suggest IS possible, it may have been towed in park.  You need to be aware that it WILL cause severe damage to drivetrain components to tow an automatic transmission vehicle with ANY wheels on the ground, even if it is in neutral.  Towing it while in park may well be what damaged the rear tires.
Ask the dealership mechanics what they found, and what they believe is the cause of the problems.  They have a better chance of being able to distinguish between cause and effect than anyone else if they have the opportunity to become acquainted with ALL the facts and circumstances.
Ask an independent third party.  Go to IATN.NET, and utilize the shopfinder on the home page to assist you in locating a knowledgeable person you can discuss this with face to face.  It may well cost a "consultation fee", but at least you will be on the path to understanding what caused what.
IF there was additional damage caused by towing, your insurance company may well want to have the tow company's insurance company bear the cost of any additional repairs not directly related to and caused by the accident.
