Suzuki: Towing a Sidekick automatic, rear driveshaft, clutch plates

Question
Saw your note a on towing standard, what about an automatic  Sidekick? I am thinking of upgrading from my 20 year old Samurai to a later model Sidekick, for the AC and a few other creature comforts. Very nice site, thanks for any help. Philip in Galveston

Answer
You'll have to disconnect the rear driveshaft from the rear axle, or trailer it.  The reason is that the clutch plates in the trans wouldn't be properly lubricated, and you would "burn up" the clutch packs.  (the engine drives the trans oil pump, and it would be highly impractical to leave it idling while towing)  The other issue is that you will have to make sure the front hubs are "out" of engagement. (usually that involves nothing more complex than backing up 5-10 feet in 2-wheel drive).
Disconnecting the rear axle only involves taking four bolts out of the connecting flange at the rear, and using bungee cords to tie the axle up so it doesn't drag on the ground.
Look at izook.com and explore the links.  There may be some kind of aftermarket disconnect available for sidekick.  I know there is for Samurai, although I'm not sure whether it's really intended for tow use.
