Tips on Buying Cars: Question regarding buying an older used car., corvair coupe, corvair owners

Question
I would like to know what you think is the easiest car to make repairs on, besides an old VW bug. I'm looking for the smallest and least expensive to repair car that I can find. I would appriciate any and all suggestions.

Thank You.

Answer
You're asking this question of a very prejudiced person, as I happen to own the American equivalent of the VW Bug, the Chevrolet Corvair.  If you don't insist on a convertible or one of the high-performance models, a Corvair coupe or sedan can be bought very reasonably, they're fun to drive and very easy to work on, and all the parts are readily available from several sources.  Corvair owners are a great group, always ready to help out a new owner.  Depending on where you live, there may be other choices like early 70's Japanese cars like the Corolla or Celica.  I say "depending on where you live" for these cars can be notorious rust buckets in my part of the country (Upstate New York, the snow capital of the U.S.).
