Tips on Buying Cars: Used cars - Older with less mileage, or newer with more mileage?, independent mechanic, independent inspection

Question
All else being equal, is the better bet a 2003 model with
115k miles, or a 2001 model with 104k miles?

I thought through this situation a few days ago about a 2001
model with 87k miles or a 2003 model with 105k miles, and
figured the 2001/87k was the way to go.  But both of those
vehicles had severe problems and I walked away.  Now, with
less difference in the mileage, part of me thinks two year
newer parts is the way to go, and the other part of me
thinks parts with less mileage is the way to go.

It looks like the answer would generally be that since they
are fairly similar mileage, whichever one was maintained
better.  They're at the same price, independent mechanic
says in same condition / approx same repairs recommended.  I
don't really prefer one over the other, just hoping to keep
future repair costs down as much as possible.

Answer
Hi Mike

Looking at vehicle's being that age,  miles - type of vehicle - options - consumer reports etc takes a back seat, present condition is all that matters, my point is a vehicle with 150K can be in much better condition than same vehicle with half the mileage.

You don't really prefer one over the other ??? - If I was in your shoes here is how I would arrive at a choice,,, go to this link on my website http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html after having tested both vehicle's I will be surprised if you still find them equal.

As for you hoping to keep future repair cost at a minimum you are taking the right steps by having an independent inspection, a step to many consumers neglect an end up with a lemon.

Study my website for a few pointers, should you have further questions I will be happy to provide some input,,, Good Luck
