Tips on Buying Cars: Winter beater, 2nd gen camaro, gas consumption

Question
Hi there, I have been searching for a winter beater for some time now (I own a 2nd gen camaro) and have been leaning more towards 4-wheel drive. I recently found a 1994 ford explorer. My question is, are these particularly prone to problems (i.e. transmission, 4wd, engine, electrical)? Just really anything that stands out as a warning light. It idles rough and the starting price is $800...I am definitely thinking about dropping this price as I work with cars personally for my job. I plan to get it up in the air as soon as I can get it to the garage. Thanks in advance for any advice

Answer
Hey Jefferson

My expertise is not mechanical but I know the Explorer quite well and have seen many go beyond 200K, I consider the Explorer very solid but a bit of a pig when it comes to gas consumption.

Starting price $800. ?
Any vehicle sold today with a price tag $2000. or less that will run for a year without major mechanical problems will have been a secure investment, with you personally working with cars I am sure you will not end up with a lemon... good luck.

SUMMARY... In this price range, year, make, model, miles don't come into play - CONDITION - is the only factor.
