Used Cars: Salvage Title, salvage title, odometer readings

Question
Dear Ray:

I am trying to sell my 1990 Ferrari TS.  I originally leased the car in 2000, bought the car from the leasing company in 2002. VIN
ZFFFG36A4L0086670

This was in Florida where I currently live and have the car registered.  When I posted the car on Ebay a report came back that in 11/1990 a Salvage Title was issued in California.  There were no odometer readings recorded posted other than the Salvage Title being issued.

The AutoCheck report also states that there has been no accidents for 22 years.  My dilemma is that I am having a difficult time trying to sell the car because of this issue.

I was not aware of this Salvage Title and there was no reference to it on my Florida Title nor any of the other 5 previous titles issued in various states.

Is there anything you can suggest as to what I can do regarding the problem.  I have been told that there is no way that this car was totaled or in an accident of the magnitude that would have produced this Salvage Title.  My Ferrari Mechanic who has maintained the car for 12 years tells me the car is sound and has never heard of this car being Salvage.

Thanks your your assistance.

Regards,

Robert Ingria

Answer
Hi Robert,
Sorry for the delay was away for a few days. I checked your post on e-bay, the history report looks nasty enough to not get any valid offers.

I assume you got a clean title and now wonder what the hell is going on ?,,, looking at the history report it passed through a few states and my guess is the car got a washed title, if you don't know what that is then check this link on my website for an explanation http://www.usedcartips.org/ACCID.html

99 out of a 100 shoppers looking at a Ferrari want complete service records and history,,, If your Mechanic has not found any repaired frame damage then without knowing all the details I am only guessing one avenue could have been a repo stolen vehicle wrecked cosmetically to the point the Insurance provider declared it salvage.

Your Mechanic says of this magnitude - is he saying there is minor frame damage but been repaired ?,,, Robert, the salvage title is not going to go away and it will have a huge impact on re-sale, so how you go from here to plant the hook for valid re-sale becomes the key, it's an area where I can provide some input,,, if you want e-mail me at paulsenray@yahoo.com with a phone # and best time to call cause I don't want to sit here doing my 2 finger typing for hours,,,lol
