How Does Using Snow Chains Help Traction?

Types

  • There are two types of popular chains available. The first, and oldest type, is an actual chain link that wraps around the tire and provides traction in snowy or icy conditions. The other type is a cable, which has the same purpose but the appearance of steel rope instead of an actual chain. These also fit around the tires of the vehicle.

Which wheels should I put them on?

  • Generally, snow chains or cables come in sets of two, and work best on the drive wheels of the vehicle. Most new cars are front wheel drive, and so the chains should be fitted onto the front wheels. Older cars and trucks and many luxury cars are rear-wheel drive, and therefore the chains should go on the rear wheels. If you have an extra set, they can be put on the non-drive wheels for added stability and control in icy and snowy conditions.

How they work

  • Snow chains or cables work like added treads to the tires. Street tires have a hard time finding traction when there is ice and snow on the ground. Snow chains will bite into the terrain and provide major added traction. It is for this reason that tractor tires have such high tread blocks, so that they can operate in mud and snow without spinning.

Drivability

  • A vehicle outfitted with snow chains or cables is limited to about 30 miles per hour maximum. They are intended for slow moving in harsh weather, and you can definitely feel when they are installed. If installed on the front wheels, you may get the sensation of driving on a bumpy road, and even feel it in the steering wheel as the chains bite. If installed on the rear wheels, you may experience the same bumpy road feel, but the steering will remain unchanged. Do not drive too long on dry land or on roads with no snow for too long, because the life of the chains may be shortened significantly.

Installation

  • Snow chains and cables wrap around the entire wheels and tires to provide traction, and lock in using a number of latching devices. If you are unsure how to put them on, have a professional do it, because if snow chains fly off the vehicle, major damage can occur, as well as an accident. If you purchased your chains new, closely follow the installation instructions.
