How Do I Take Apart a Hydraulic Ram Cylinder?

Hydraulic rams (also called hydraulic cylinders) are used in many different applications, including hydraulic suspensions. These cylinders are responsible for lifting and lowering the vehicle's suspension and have seals at the top of them to keep the hydraulic fluid in place. These seals need to be changed regularly, or the hydraulic rams won't be able to hold pressure, and the car will not be able to lift with the hydraulic system. Fortunately, taking apart the cylinder can be done in just a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Strap wrench
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Bench vise
  • Loosen the fitting on the hydraulic hose leading into the cylinder with an open-end wrench. Allow the fluid to drain then disconnect the fitting entirely and remove the hose connection to the cylinder.

  • Take the cylinder over to a work bench. Install the cylinder into a bench vise. Remove the lower cap on the cylinder with a strap wrench.

  • Pull the ram inside of the hydraulic cylinder out of the assembly with a sharp jerking motion. Put the ram on the work surface. Pry out the seals along the top edge of the ram with a flat head screwdriver.
