How to Remove the Headlamp on a Thunderbird

To make modifications to the Ford Thunderbird's front end, such as replacing the factory grille, you'll likely need to remove the car's headlamp. The headlamp could also be busted, which would require you to replace it. The headlamp on the Ford Thunderbird is a retro-style circular light that only houses the headlight bulb. The vehicle uses a separate lamp case for the parking light and turn signal.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Turn the engine off for safety. Find the metal anchors behind the headlamp. Grasp the anchors by the angled head and pull them up to remove them. There are two anchors behind each headlamp.

  • Inspect the back edge of the headlamp. You'll see a Phillips screw. Remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Slide the headlamp forward gently. Be careful, the wiring and bulb are still attached to it.

  • Pull the wiring connector gently away from the back of the headlamp to unplug it. Grasp the plastic nut surrounding the bulb socket and rotate it counterclockwise to remove it.

  • Grasp the bulb socket and pull it straight back. The headlamp is now disconnected and removed from the Thunderbird.
