How to Remove Chrome Trim Pieces Off a Car Door

Chrome trim is present on many cars and trucks, both old and new. Removing the chrome trim from the door to replace it or paint underneath it may take a little time and the use of a few household tools. You can remove the chrome trim pieces off of a car door in less than 20 minutes without harming the paint beneath it or breaking the trim itself. You also may replace the chrome trim with original or new parts.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Towel
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Waffle-weave towel

Remove Chrome Trim

  • Place the towel on the car’s surface near the edge of the chrome trim. Put the screwdriver on the towel and slide it underneath the trim.

  • Pry the trim up with the screwdriver, using the towel to protect the paint from scratches from the screwdriver.

  • Move the screwdriver and towel a few inches from where you first started and gently pry more of the trim. Do this until the entire trim piece is loose from the door.

  • Wipe the area where the chrome trim was with denatured alcohol and a waffle-weave towel to remove any residue on the paint.

Replacing Chrome Trim

  • Place the piece of chrome trim next to the place on the car where it is going to fit. Make sure the trim is facing the right way and is going on the correct door.

  • Place the double-sided tape onto the door in the correct location. Line the trim up with the tape and make sure it fits directly over the tape, covering all it.

  • Push the trim into place and firmly press it against the door with your hands until it is firmly attached to the tape.
