How to Fix the Vinyl Top of a Car

Repairing vinyl convertible top of your vehicle does not need to be a stressful project to take on. Without having to remove and replace the vinyl altogether, a fairly simple patching technique can be done. Be sure to have all materials ready before beginning to speed up the repair process.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild soap
  • Soft sponge
  • Soft cloths
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Vinyl patch
  • Vinyl adhesive
  • Paintbrush
  • Wash and dry the surface with soap and water to remove all dirt and buildup.

  • Cut the frayed edges off from around the torn area.

  • Measure the size of the hole to be repaired. Cut the vinyl patch to a size that is at least one inch wider than the damage all the way around.

  • Apply a thin layer of vinyl adhesive to one side of the patch using the paintbrush. Both sides are the same, so it does not matter which is glued down.

  • Hold the patch over the damage before pressing it down. Firmly apply it over the hole, making sure the extra vinyl is glued to the existing vinyl.

  • Allow at least 24 hours for the vinyl adhesive to dry completely before using the convertible top.
