How to Remove the Front Shocks on an FJ Cruiser

The FJ Land Cruiser was Toyota's version of the off-road Jeep. Built with off-road enthusiasts in mind, these vehicles featured big tires, strong engines and large front shocks to make them easier to navigate on rough terrain. Owners often modified their Land Cruisers to make them even more suited for off-road adventures. One of the big modifications performed on the Land Cruiser was the installation of larger front shocks.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire iron
  • Jack
  • Jack stand
  • Socket set
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel using the tire iron supplied with the Toyota.

  • Place a jack under the frame, directly behind the wheel. Jack the Toyota off the ground until you can fit a jack stand behind the jack. Lower the Toyota onto the jack stand.

  • Remove the lug nuts from the tire using the tire iron and then pull the tire off the wheel studs.

  • Remove the through bolt that secures the bottom of the shock to the lower shock hoop using a socket and ratchet.

  • Remove the through bolt that secures the top of the shock to the upper shock hoop using a socket and ratchet.

  • Pull the lower and upper parts of the shock free from the shock hoops and insert the replacement shock.

  • Secure the top part of the shock to the upper shock hoop using the new bolt supplied with the shock, the socket and the ratchet.

  • Secure the bottom part of the shock to the lower shock hoop using the new bolt supplied with the shock, the socket and the ratchet.

  • Place the wheel back onto the wheel studs, thread the lug nuts onto the studs with your fingers and then tighten each nut a quarter turn with the tire iron.

  • Jack the Toyota off the jack stand, remove the stand and lower the vehicle to the ground.

  • Tighten each lug nut with the tire iron and repeat the process on the other side of the Toyota.
