How to Tint Tail Lights With Spray

Tail lights are all the same boring red with yellow (amber) colored areas and the white spot for the reverse light. Many people would like to get rid of the yellow color and make the whole tail light red with only the white area. Others like to give the whole tail light a smokey effect by making the lights dark gray or black. Change the look of your tail lights by learning how to tint tail lights with spray.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet/socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Alcohol
  • Towel
  • 2 cans of spray paint
  • 1 can of clear coat paint
  • Newspaper
  • Utility knife
  • Painter's mask
  • Remove the tail lights from your car. Open the trunk and find the back of the tail light and remove the two bolts that hold the lights in place. Unclip the electrical plug from the lights.

  • Wipe the tail lights down with rubbing alcohol and a towel to remove any dirt or dust.

  • Lay the lights on a flat surface to paint. Remember that overspray will get on the area a few feet around the lights, so lay down some newspaper too.

  • Place masking tape over the area for the reverse light. By most laws, the reverse light must remain clear/white. Use a sharp utility knife to cut away the excess tape around the reverse light, making a clean edge.

  • Spray paint the tail lights using light coats, for a total of three or four coats of paint. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next coat.

  • After the tail lights are dry, spray a total of three or four coats of clear coat paint on them, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying a new coat. The tail lights may look cloudy while they are wet, but they will dry clear.
