How to Get Rain Spots off a Windshield

Water spots on a nice clean windshield can be distracting to a driver and reduce visibility. The spots left behind after rain dries up are calcium carbonate, otherwise known as salt, and can easily be cleaned up with any products used to clean glass and mirrors. There are products that can help repel the water off the glass as well and prevent future spotting. The key to cleaning a windshield is to treat it like a fine mirror and refrain from using abrasive chemicals and cleaning materials on it. This will help your windshield stay clean as well as scratch-free.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rag
  • Towel
  • Window washing detergent or vinegar and water
  • Rain-X
  • Newspaper
  • Water
  • Wet the surface of the windshield with warm water and let it soak for a few minutes. This will soften any deposits on the glass and make it easier to clean. If there are any stubborn spots or dead bugs stuck to the windshield lay a warm wet cloth or towel on the spot to soak it.

  • Clean the surface of the windshield with a soft rag or crumpled up newspaper. Use a window washing detergent with ammonia or vinegar and water. Never use a harsh cleaning pad such as a steel wool pad or razor blade, even on stubborn spots, as this can scratch and damage the glass. Clean the glass in a circular motion starting from the top and working your way down. Make sure to lift and clean under the windshield wipers.

  • Rinse the glass with warm water. Double check that all of the spots and dirt came off of the glass. Take your towel and go over the surface of the windshield to dry it. Make sure it is thoroughly dry before applying the Rain-X.

  • Apply Rain-X or a similar water repelling product to your windshield to prevent future spots from appearing. Apply the Rain-X to a dry towel and rub it onto the glass using a circular motion. Be sure to apply it evenly to the entire windshield. This will leave a water repelling film on the glass. Allow it to sit on the windshield for 5 minutes.

  • Remove the water repellent from the windshield with a clean dry towel. Rub it off and make sure the glass is clear and spotless. This film will make any water that gets on your windshield simply roll off without leaving any spots.

  • Repeat this process every few months, or as needed, to make sure that your windshield stays clean and free of spots.
