A Chevy Silverado that has had its Passlock security system enabled will shut down the fuel injectors on the vehicle and will not allow the vehicle to start. Resetting the system may be as simple as using the vehicle key. If the system disables the vehicle consistently or if the simple solution does not fix the Silverado, a separate bypass system may be installed in the vehicle to avoid the security system from engaging in the future.
Turn the key to the "On" position in the Silverado without turning over. Let the vehicle sit for 10 minutes, leaving the key in the "On" position. Some Passlock systems will relearn the codes after this amount of time.
Try to start the vehicle. If it starts, you have solved the issue. If it does not, you will need to either take the vehicle in or install a bypass module to circumvent the security system altogether.
Install the bypass module. Bypass modules are commonly used for installing remote starters on vehicles. The Silverado uses Passlock 2 bypass modules. There are two separate Passlock 2 systems used. To determine which kind you have remove the lower dash using a screwdriver. In the harness going to the steering column, you are looking for 3 thin wires which are white, yellow, and orange/black. Cut the yellow wire (positive) and strip back some of the orange/black wire (ground). Connect the potentiometer with the vehicle in either drive or reverse. Hold the key in the start position and read the measurement. Crank the starter. If the reading changes you will use a separate method of connecting the bypass module.
Follow the steps in the bypass module kit to complete installation once you have determined which method is required. (See Resources.) Make sure you are using same sized resistors.
