How to Know When You Need New Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers should be typically replaced every six months or so. However, you may need to change windshield wipers if you experience particular performance problems before they are due to be changed. You may also notice that the wipers have an altered appearance. Since replacing windshield wipers are an easy fix, you should change them as soon as you encounter any of these issues.

  • Look for streaking that occurs when the windshield wipers are engaged. If this occurs, water will remain on the windshield since the wipers are missing these particular sections. The water may also collect in droplets upon the windshield. A hazing effect can take place as well if any road debris becomes stuck to the wiper.

  • Listen for any strange noises made by the windshield wipers. You may hear a chattering sound when your windshield wipers are due for replacement. It makes this noise because the wiper is not properly engaging with the glass.

  • Notice any wind lift during higher driving speeds. If this occurs, the wipers will temporarily lose contact with the windshield glass as you drive on highways.

  • Check to see if the rubber of the wipers is damaged. It may have split into sections or have pulled away from the wiper arm. This will cause a slapping sound when you turn on the windshield wipers.

  • Examine the edges of the windshield wipers. If the edging looks worn or torn in places, it is also time to make a replacement. The arm that holds the rubber may also be the problem, if you see any bent pieces or cracks.
