How to Set a Homelink Code on a Prius

The Toyota Prius has a unique feature called "HomeLink" produced by Johnson Controls. This feature is a vehicle-based control system that allows a vehicle to communicate with garage door openers, gates, home lighting and other home systems controlled remotely. This technology cuts down on the number of remotes that a consumer has to carry with them for these tasks. HomeLink has been installed in Prius vehicles since 2007 and is compatible with 99 percent of garage door opening systems available on the market at the time of publication.

Things You'll Need

  • Remote of programmable device
  • Turn on the rearview mirror in your Toyota Prius by pushing the power button. The mirror is on when the indicator light displays a steady green light.

  • Choose the button on which you wish to program the device. You have the choice of three buttons located on the left side of the mirror.

  • Press the desired button and keep it depressed until programming is complete.

  • Hold the remote of the appropriate device next to the mirror.

  • Press the activation button on the remote of the appropriate device multiple times.

  • Release the button on the vehicle mirror and stop pressing the activation button on the remote when the indicator light begins to rapidly flash a red color.

  • Press the newly programmed HomeLink button for one second. The indicator light should switch from a steady green display to a steady red display. When the red indicator light is displayed it means that a signal has been sent to the device to activate.
